So, I've been working on this fellowship for the last two months. Tomorrow is the day we turn in our papers. My rough draft has been done for two weeks, I'm editing the body tonight and that's almost done. My presentation went amazing. I start working again tomorrow, 40 hours a week.
That is my summer, in a nutshell.
Except for the conference.
This weekend was the CIC SROP conference at Purdue. It's a big conference of undergrad researchers from the Big 10 (plus a few others). Friday was the first day of the conference proper, and it was pretty kind of lame in my case. I had fun with the people around me, but the workshops that were intended to provide information about grad school funding and careers was aimed at people in the sciences or minorities. That makes sense as much of the attending body was mostly made up of minorities within the sciences (this is not a bad thing). There was not another male Caucasian history student at the conference. I enjoy the fact that there is significant outreach to people of disparately represented populations happening at these conferences. However, the lack of information pertinent to myself or those of similar background gives me something of an idea that I am not, perhaps, the specific type of person that the Big 10 desires to be seen reaching out to these days. Whatever. After all that I went for a hike up to some big water tower Purdue has. Then I went back to our accommodations and watched a really terrible movie with the Pathways people. Despite the paltry offerings in the workshop, I had a good day.
The second day started off in a similar way, with a recruitment fair pointed entirely at the sciences. Purdue had two grad students from their history program, but that's all I could find. The rest of the day completely made up for the rest of the conference. The history roundtable was fantastic. It really gave me confidence in the future of the field. I presented my work on Uzbekistan's new national identity based on Tamerlane and it was pretty well received. No one really seemed to know what I was talking about with the history portion, but every other person presenting was working on project pertaining to US history. Still got a ton of comments and commendations, had a long talk with another historian about his true passion, Puerto Rican national identity. Awesome conversation about the dangers of making analysis of the national identities of other countries there. Made another professional contact with a person working on black fraternal organizations and their impact on politics in the early 20th century. Very very very very interesting work that could rewrite portions of historical belief. There was an Arabic major working on the origins of Arabic, I think I freaked him out by stating over and over just how awesome I thought his project was. In all of this, I took up talking to a really awesome girl who is studying at Madison for the summer from Taylor University. That went on all night and the whole bus ride home.
Basically, it was a damn good weekend. However, I'm very conflicted after it, but I won't talk about that. |

Well, I've decided to go the Austin City Limits Festival this year. September 14-16, so I will be taking some school off. It will also be a long trip, getting to Texas and whatnot. But, damn, that's the best lineup of any festival I've seen this year. Just as good as the Lollapalooza lineup last year, if not better. I can miss some school, haha. |

It's the end of the year, and that means I have a midterm due tomorrow. I read the stuff, but I still have to write everything...well, I have the intro done, so that's one and a half pages. Eight more to go?
Ah well, not much has been going on, hung out with people last weekend and this weekend, was a-ok.
Found out that I got into into the Pathways Scholars Program last week as a result of my Tamerlane/Formation of national identity in post-Soviet Middle East research proposal. So, I get money (2.5k, omgz) etc etc to stay down here this summer, experience in formal research, grad school prep, stuff like that. Thinking about making a website, should be an interesting process. So that will be a small amount of my summer, but probably the highlight. That and going home.
So, year's almost done, I'm gonna get good grades, get money, and so on. Nothing too interesting, though. Should go back to writing now. |

From the Decemberists show at The Orpheum in Madison, WI on 4/20/07. Playing Billy Liar, it was very very awesome. I'm surprised at the quality of the recording from my camera, but Youtube made it look worse, of course. |

Haa. I don't know what to do with myself. Almost disappointed in myself right now.
I think I'll drive myself to distraction with that class. |

I very much want to talk to the girl who sits next to me in history class. She's been next to me in the last two semesters of history classes I've taken. Today, we both got up and we looked at each other for a bit and I thought about finally saying something, but then decided to just go to work and went out the door behind her, like usual. This is the way it goes, lately.
Either I need to grow a pair and figure out some way to start a conversation or I need to stop taking history classes. |

Turning in the fellowship application in a few hours.
Little worried.
But, after that, it's out of my hands.
Would be fun to get the fellowship, though. |

I'm working on a revision of a research proposal for a fellowship I am taking a shot at. My faculty advisor gave me a few suggestions. I'm having a lot of trouble integrating them in a way that makes as much sense as his actual suggestions. This is all very discouraging.
Maybe I'm not cut out for this, haha? |

oh, ya. Just so I remember. Last semester =
Middle eastern history: A. Civil War history: A. American Political Science: A.
Last semester went pretty well. This semester is looking the same. |
